Australia stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/ASX 200 down 0.42%

At the close in Sydney, the S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.42%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/ASX 200 were Nearmap Ltd (ASX:NEA), which rose 9.57% or 0.145 points to trade at 1.660 at the close. Meanwhile, Mcmillan Shakespeare Ltd (ASX:MMS) added 8.98% or 0.59 points to end at 7.16 and Appen Ltd (ASX:APX) was up 8.84% or 2.35 points to 28.94 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were National Storage REIT (ASX:NSR), which fell 6.51% or 0.110 points to trade at 1.580 at the close. NRW Holdings Ltd (ASX:NWH) declined 6.11% or 0.10 points to end at 1.46 and Cooper Energy Ltd (ASX:COE) was down 5.88% or 0.025 points to 0.400.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange by 643 to 551 and 352 ended unchanged.

The S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was down 13.80% to 24.716.

Gold Futures for June delivery was down 0.07% or 1.15 to $1709.45 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 0.49% or 0.12 to hit $24.44 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 0.29% or 0.09 to trade at $31.06 a barrel.

AUD/USD was up 0.21% to 0.6443, while AUD/JPY fell 0.02% to 68.53.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.16% at 99.925.
