The luxurious Greenwich, CT, estate of the fashion mogul Tommy Hilfiger and his wife, Dee, has come on the market for $47.5 million. The pricey property is currently the most expensive listing in the tony town.

The couple purchased the property in 2010 for a little over $31 million, and proceeded to give a total makeover to the mansion, which was built in 1939. They now intend to leave their East Coast digs for Palm Beach, FL.

“This completely renovated and magnificently decorated property is a spectacular English countryside historic landmark,” says the listing agent, Janet Milligan with Sotheby’s International Realty Greenwich Brokerage.

“At an elevation of 570 feet, the highest point in Greenwich, the property offers commanding views of the New York City skyline and Long Island Sound.”

Beyond its links with the fashion world, the mansion comes with an intriguing backstory.

The structure, originally called Château Paterno, was designed by the architect Greville Rickard for the real-estate magnate Charles V. Paterno. In the 1960s, the financier and art patron Joseph H. Hirshhorn moved in, to house his famed art collection and sculpture garden, which can now be found at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, D.C.

The Hilfigers have added their own stamp to the estate, delivering a “painstaking reinvention of the historic property,” the press materials note.

In addition to restoring the home, they have brought it up to modern standards.

The landmark residence features 13,344 square feet of space with six bedrooms, seven full bathrooms, and three powder rooms. Details include six fireplaces, carved millwork, wide-board and limestone floors, and textile wall coverings.

The “comfortably elegant” owners’ quarters offer two bathrooms, two dressing rooms, and an office.

In addition to the main house, a guesthouse comes with a living room, kitchen, two bedrooms, and two bathrooms.

The interiors reflect both Tommy’s “All-American style” and Dee’s “European aesthetic,” according to a profile of the home in Architectural Digest.

The couple commissioned Andre Tchelistcheff Architects, as well as the interior designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard, and also Cindy Rinfret of Rinfret, Ltd., for the overhaul.

“The house was in disrepair, and we knew it needed a lot of work, but we also knew that this would be our home,” Dee told AD in the 2017 profile. “Tommy likes to buy and sell houses, but we’re here to stay.”

Three years later, they’re here to sell.

The gated estate features jaw-dropping interiors, starting with the entry with carved wood staircase, and proceeding to the formal dining room with wood paneling, and the massive kitchen with exposed wood beams and adjacent breakfast room.

An opulent theater is styled with Turkish-inspired finishes. A family and game room includes a wine cellar and tasting room, fireplace, billiard-table, and a wall of glass that opens outside.

Extending over 22 acres, the grounds, designed by the landscape designer Miranda Brooks, feature a fountained rose garden, a boxwood knot garden, a water garden with koi pond and fountain, and a topiary garden. The spread also includes a pool, an all-weather tennis court, and a great lawn facing Long Island Sound.

For auto storage, there’s a detached four-bay garage, as well as a two-bay garage for the guesthouse.

The Hilfigers have another listing on the market in the Miami area. The price of this lavish Florida mansion has been dropped, and it is now available for $24.5 million. The waterfront abode that housed the couple’s pop art collection was also designed to the nines by Bullard.

The couple remain busy with real estate deals. They sold their quirky penthouse at the Plaza Hotel in 2019 for a reported $31.25 million. They also unloaded a Mediterranean-style mansion in Palm Beach for $35 million in 2017, $1 million more than they had paid a year earlier.
