Investing.com – U.S. stocks were higher after the close on Monday, as gains in the , and sectors led shares higher.

At the close in NYSE, the gained 0.68% to hit a new all time high, while the index added 0.75%, and the index gained 1.32%.

The best performers of the session on the were UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:), which rose 2.11% or 5.83 points to trade at 282.67 at the close. Meanwhile, Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:) added 2.08% or 1.20 points to end at 58.81 and Dow Inc (NYSE:) was up 1.86% or 1.01 points to 55.20 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:), which fell 0.66% or 0.46 points to trade at 68.91 at the close. McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:) declined 0.65% or 1.25 points to end at 191.89 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:) was down 0.62% or 0.37 points to 59.38.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were L Brands Inc (NYSE:) which rose 6.44% to 19.17, Tiffany & Co (NYSE:) which was up 6.17% to settle at 133.25 and Incyte Corporation (NASDAQ:) which gained 5.94% to close at 94.00.

The worst performers were Comcast Corp (NASDAQ:) which was down 3.24% to 43.35 in late trade, Jacobs Engineering Group Inc (NYSE:) which lost 2.82% to settle at 90.75 and JM Smucker Company (NYSE:) which was down 2.37% to 105.83 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Sorrento Therape (NASDAQ:) which rose 94.38% to 3.11, Janone Inc (NASDAQ:) which was up 54.51% to settle at 3.9400 and Diffusion Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:) which gained 51.61% to close at 0.4700.

The worst performers were Cymabay Therapeu (NASDAQ:) which was down 75.86% to 1.340 in late trade, La Jolla Pharmaceutical Co (NASDAQ:) which lost 53.58% to settle at 2.59 and Adamis Pharma (NASDAQ:) which was down 50.96% to 0.62 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 2057 to 783 and 91 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2034 rose and 626 declined, while 68 ended unchanged.

Shares in Tiffany & Co (NYSE:) rose to 52-week highs; up 6.17% or 7.74 to 133.25. Shares in Incyte Corporation (NASDAQ:) rose to 52-week highs; up 5.94% or 5.27 to 94.00. Shares in Cymabay Therapeu (NASDAQ:) fell to 3-years lows; losing 75.86% or 4.210 to 1.340. Shares in La Jolla Pharmaceutical Co (NASDAQ:) fell to 5-year lows; losing 53.58% or 2.99 to 2.59.

The , which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 3.81% to 11.87 a new 52-week low.

Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.58% or 8.55 to $1461.95 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 0.24% or 0.14 to hit $57.91 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract unchanged 0.00% or 0.00 to trade at $62.53 a barrel.

EUR/USD was down 0.01% to 1.1012, while USD/JPY rose 0.03% to 108.94.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.04% at 98.218.
